About Dharmavaram
Located at a distance of 47 kms from Anantapur, Dharmavaram is a small city that is well-connected both by rail and road. Dharmavaram Municipality had been formed on 1 April 1964 as a Grade–III municipality. It was later upgraded to Selection Grade. The city has a jurisdictional area of 42.50 km2 and features 40 election wards. Each of these wards are represented by a ward member and the ward committee, which is headed by a chairperson. As per the 2011 census, it had a population of 121,874 with 62,250 males, 59,624 females –a sex ratio of 958 females per 1000 males, higher than the national average of 940 per 1000 and average literacy rate of 71.07%.
History and Geography of Dharmavaram
It has derived its name from 'Dharmamba', which also means the the mother of 'Sri Kriyasakthi Odeyar’. She had also constructed the local Dharmavaram tank. Dharmavaram is located at 14.43°N 77.72°E and has an average elevation of 345 metres, which is about 1131 feet. Art and Culture of Dharmavaram
Leather and weaving industry- The city is best known for its rich silk and cotton weaving industry along with leather puppets. Their sarees are popular all across the world. The handloom industry here produces different materials, like cotton, tussar silk, cotton silk, etc. The classic make of these sarees includes broad borders, adorned by brocaded gold patterns. They do not follow any colour contrast and the Dharmavaram saris comprise heavy 'pallus' with exclusive designs. It is one of the best suggested places to shop for ethnic and stylish saris in the country. There are many local production houses here that allow you to go in and see the weaving process. Sri Lakshmi Chennakeshwara Temple - Another popular attraction here is Sri Lakshmi Chennakeshwara Temple that is best known for its architectural brilliance and for the perennial waterspout and pillars.
